ORIGIN
John
Sutcliffe came to the USA in
1968 to work as a cowboy in
Carbondale, CO following 6 years
serving as an officer in the
British army. After brief stints
in Oregon and Nevada he moved
to New York City where he re-opened
Tavern on the Green and started
The River Café under
the Brooklyn Bridge. It was
in New York where he met his
wife Emily (a trainee surgeon
at the time), with whom he moved
to Charleston, South Carolina
and established several successful
restaurants. In the early 80’s
John and Emily relocated to
Shiprock, NM; she to work with
the Ute Indians, he to pursue
his passion for writing. In
1985 they bought the old Battlerock
Ranch down McElmo Canyon, a
run down pile of dirt at the
time, and literally transformed
it into the beautiful farm it
is today.
