  • Moki Dugway, a hair rising road climbing the face of a 2,500' wall of rock

  • Muley Point, rock pools that are perched above a 2,500 drop to the San Juan River

Places to Hike In McElmo Canyon

Sand Canyon and Rock Creek Trailhead - moderate - Across from Sutcliffe Vineyards is a beautiful hike of the red rock canyons. Bring lots of water!

Goodman Point Trail - easy -1.1 mile loop trail located near Cortez, Colorado. Best in April until October

Sharkstooth Pass Trail - moderate - 3 mile trafficked out and back trail located near Mancos, Colorado. Best from March until September - Dog friendly

McPhee Overlook - moderate - 7.1 mile out and back trail located near Dolores, Colorado that features a lake

Boggy Draw Trail - moderate - 8.4 mile trafficked loop trail located near Dolores, Colorado. This trail is mostly used for hiking, trail running and mountain biking - Dog Friendly

Madden Peak - hard - 4.5 mile point-to-point trail located near Hesperus, Colorado. Stunning view of the La Plata Canyon at the top

Priest Gulch and Highline Driveway Loop Trail - hard - 15.6 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Dolores, Colorado - Dog friendly
